As with “Yorkstone” and sandstone paving, the system of laying blocks / flagstones (modular units) dates back many centuries and has been used all over the world, with flagstones, granite setts and brick paviours being widely used.
Modern use of modular units has developed widely, as it provides a quick and simple solution to many paving requirements.
Modern technology has made it possible to manufacture concrete into pre-formed shapes, which are uniform and much cheaper to make than quarried or hand shaped products. Commonly still known as Flagstone or slab paving, other types are known as “block”or “Tegula” paving, these products are seen widely around much of the new build housing and commercial developments and come in a variety of different shapes and colours.
Preparation work for all these types of paving, is very similar and is mainly affected by the typical use of the finished paving, such as driveways or pedestrian use.
Due to the size of most of these modular paving units, it is very easy to accommodate patterns and create separate areas or route direction within the paving, without the need to add unsightly white lining.
Modular paving has the advantage of allowing surface water to trickle through the sand joints, where these are used, and minimize the need for formal surface drainage systems. This type of system will comply with the new Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) legislation for new or re-built driveways.
One of the added advantages of theses systems, is that sections can be easily replaced, changed, added to or removed entirely, without damage to the overall paved area. It can be easily cleaned and treated to ensure a good appearance for a long period of time.
